April 2017

4/29/2017

We are in the full spring swing of things now! The greenhouse is bursting with vegetables ready to be planted in the fields, our early field plots have been harrowed and amended, and the first seedings of spinach, lettuce, arugula, turnips, radish, carrots, and beets have been made. This coming week will be a busy week of transplanting kale, broccoli, kohlrabi, chard, cauliflower, and more.

Before I share some photos from around the farm, I wanted to let everyone know that we have a few shares still available and would love to sell these soon! Remember, if you are a current share member and refer a new member, you will receive a $20 farm credit for the referral! You can reserve online here to pay via credit card or, if you prefer to pay in installments, please use our online booking form.

That's all for now at this busy time of year! I will be contacting all 2017 share members with full details of start date and all that jazz in about 3 weeks time.

Transplants patiently waiting to be planted in the fields. Unlike last year, we have avoided an aphid infestation in the greenhouse, which means healthier transplants!

Inevitably, when we have some newly hatched chicks or ducklings in the spring, we lose power. This little guy was the first to hatch and then the power promptly went out so he/she had to cuddle with me for some warmth.

Me seeding the first of the early greens - arugula to be exact.

The garlic is looking pretty good! We are experimenting with growing it through landscape fabric to reduce weed issues and maintain soil moisture. The wood chips are to provide extra protection to the bulbs.

All the animals are thrilled with the return of green pasture. This photo was taken about 2 weeks ago and the grass is looking much nicer already.

On the same day that I seeded all the greens, we had a major thunderstorm roll through in the afternoon. This 30+ foot spruce tree was knocked down on to our walk-in cooler / wash station. Amazingly, the cooler fared better than the tree. The first three roof tresses were snapped and the steel roof was punctured in one spot but otherwise the building will be functional once these repairs are made.
