We are in the midst of the sprint to get everything planted for the coming season. With the extraordinarily warm days we've been getting lately it feels more like mid-summer planting than spring planting! And we've actually had to begin irrigating already. Typically this isn't necessary until near the end of June. There is much talk in farming circles as to what this means for the weather in the coming season and the consensus seems to be that nobody knows!
Despite the oddness of the weather, we have been able to get carrots, beets, parsnips, peas, broccoli, turnip, radish, arugula, spinach, onions, cabbage, kale, collards, and swiss chard all planted. This coming week many more crops will follow. We're really excited for this 2015 season and providing our share members and market customers with some delicious produce! In addition to all the planting, we have welcomed our two interns for the season: Kim and Erin. These young women will be living and working with us for the next few months and their help is invaluable. Stay tuned to future blog posts to hear more about them and they will soon become familiar faces at the CSA drop off and market. In other farm news, we are in the midst of propagating and transplanting fruit and nut trees. Just today, Kim potted up 200 plum trees! And construction projects are never-ending around here: tomorrow we will be erecting two caterpillar tunnels which we will grow some of our peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes in. And then we will be dismantling and moving our greenhouse so it can be converted to a heated greenhouse for starting seedlings. And then, we have to build several poly houses for our new turkeys and meat chickens that arrived the other day from the hatchery. These chicks, along with the many ducks we have incubated ourselves makes our farm full of babies at the moment. Phew! There is always lots to do on a farm in the springtime! We still have approximately 15 shares still available. If you know of anyone interested in fresh, local produce please share our information with them. All share members that refer a new member will receive a $20 farm credit! For those that have reserved a share, we will be sending an email near the end of May or early June to confirm the first official pickup day for the share. |
