After a cold and extremely wet first week of May we are busy planting, seeding, and more planting! We have planted three varieties of kale, swiss chard, collards, kohlrabi, two varieties of cabbage, and cauliflower. This week all the onions and broccoli will be added to the field. Normally we plant onions a few weeks earlier but the onion beds were just way too wet to work the soil until this weekend. In addition to all these transplants, we've also seeded peas, carrots, beets, spinach, lettuce, arugula, radishes, and turnips. This year we have welcomed our part-time staff member, Ewa, to the market garden. She works on Tuesday and Thursdays and helps me (Lorraine) with all the tasks that require more than 1 pair of hands! Over the course of the season you may have a chance to meet her either on our farm or at the CSA pickup. Our boys, Terran (11 years old) and Rowan (8 years old) have also officially become employees and work in the market garden about 8 - 10 hours per week. They particularly love to harvest so our share members can expect that some of their produce has been harvested by Terran and Rowan. Here are a few events / items I want to highlight: 1. Share Members will receive their 'Welcome Email' with lots of details by next week. This will confirm the first official start date and other important details. 2. We are going to be vendors at the Aberfoyle Farmers' Market this year. The first market is Saturday, May 27 8am - 1pm at the Optimist Recreation Centre, next to the Pusclinch Library. The Aberfoyle market is a local-only market which means no resellers! You will find vegetable and fruit, flowers, herbs, honey, sourdough breads, prepared foods, craft artisans and more! 3. Also on Saturday, May 27 (busy day for us!) we will be participating in the Taste Real Spring Rural Romp. From 10am - 4pm our farm will be open to the public for touring. You can see our market garden in-person, visit with our adorable alpacas and pigs, learn more about beekeeping and purchase farm products. This is a great way for share members to see where their food comes from! Rob and the boys will be running open house while I am at the farmers' market. For now, you can find us working away in the fields to get everything growing for you! Comments are closed.
